DIRECTIONS TO OLD MILL BARN (CA10 1HY)
(please note that you would be well-advised to use the directions below for the last part of the journey as some sat-navs direct you to very narrow and windy roads which are, in fact, slower than the main route described)
From the M6 (from north and south)
Leave the M6 at junction 40 (Penrith). Take the A66 to Brough and Scotch Corner. After half a mile, at roundabout take 2nd exit - A686 to Alston and Hexham.
Stay on this road passing over the river Eden (via metal bridge) and going through Langwathby, and on into Melmerby (about 9 miles). At the top of the village of Melmerby there is a sharp left bend, followed quickly by a sharp right hand bend. Do not take this second bend, but instead go straight on (signposted Gamblesby). It is just over a mile to our village. Do take care on this narrow road.
When you enter the village, you will pass a church on the left, and a chapel by the village green. Just at the end of the green is an old red BT telephone box, followed shortly after by a signposted turning to the left. Go sharp right at this junction. This is just a little lane edged with grass and with parked cars in it. Keep going past those cars, and just as the tarmac runs out, Old Mill Barn is on the left.
Approaching from the East
If you are coming from the A1, Scotch Corner, take the A66 into Penrith and then pick up the A686 at the first roundabout as you approach Penrith, signposted Alston and Hexham. From there, follow the directions above.
If you are coming from the North East, you can take the A686 to Alston and stay on that road into Melmerby, turning right just before the enter the village. From there follow the directions above. We would recommend that you do not use this road in winter when bad weather is forecast. The alternative is to carry on along the A69 to Carlisle and then down the M6 to Penrith.
